St. George Fort is an important monument holding the secrets of historical events in the city. The fort in present Chennai houses the Tamil Nadu Secretariat and the Legislative Assembly. St George fort also consist of St. Mary’s Church ,one of the oldest British churches in India, built in the year 1680.The famous govt. museum is situated in the Fort compound. The museum formally opened in 1928 has a fine collection of original writings of the men who made Chennai. This museum has an outstanding collection of early coins, silverware, porcelain, uniform, manuscripts, engravings and aquatints of early Chennai .

A fine specimen for the Indo –Saracen style of architecture, this building is constructed in red sandstone. Not only the treasure of works found inside but also the building itself is interesting, for it is filled with intricate carvings. The complex was build before 1789 ans was a place of assemblage for the British tillthe government bought it in 1930.The Museum was established in 1857 and has the country’s best collection of South Indian Bronzes. It also has Geology, Anthropology, Botany, Zoology and Archaeology sections.The national gallery exhibits several beautiful paintings, which include 16th & 18th century ones from Rajasthan ( Mugal period)

Valluvar kottam , yet another architectural marvel was built in memory of Tamil saint Philosopher Thiruvalluvar, who is believed to have lived 2000 years ago.The saint authored a didactic book of epic proportions called Thirukkural consisting of 1330 couplets under 133 headings. The memorial is shaped like a temple chariot with an auditorium to accommodate upto 4000 spectators. The Temple chariot structure is carved in granite with intricate details the Dravidian Architectural style.

Santhome Besilica derives its name from St. Thomas, an apostle of Jesus Christ. He came to India in A.D. 52 and died in A.D. 72. His body was buried in Mylapore, and the national Shrine of St. Thomas Basilica, Santhome , Mylapore built over the tomb of this Apostle.In the whole world, there are only three churches built over the tomb of an Apostle of Jesus Christ.The Besilica of St. Peter built over the tomb of St. Peter in rome.Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela built over the tomb of St. James in Spain are the other two churches.
There are new structures today: The Tomb of St. Thomas Chapel below the Basilica and Museum cum theatre. The new underground chapel with a separate access outside the church structure allows pilgrims to pray at tomb and the museum exhibits artifacts connected with St. Thomas and the Besilica, And the theatre is used for screening a short video on the life of the Apostle.

St. Thomas mount church is a small church dedicated to Our Lady of Expectation.It is a small hillock located near guindy Chennai Close to the Airport.St. Thomas mount is assossiated with St.Thomas the Apostle of Jesus Christ who is believed to have been martyred here. The mount is known as Parankimalai, or Periyamali in Lacal language Tamil.The Church build by Portuguese in 1923 stand at the summit of the 300 foot hight St.Thomas Mount. The Apostle used to pray on the hill here and belive that he was assassinated by a shot of an arrow in ad 72, by persons hostile to him.Thus the hillock acquired the name St. Thomas Mount.
